At CAPS we celebrate our diverse population and the fact that our students speak many different languages. The majority of our students are bilingual, trilingual, or even quadrilingual. We are proud to share that our school community speaks over ten different languages natively. Our school community speaks English, Spanish, Dutch, Arabic, Papiamentu, Hindi, Sindi, Mandarin, Cantonese, German, French, and Italian.
Core subjects and specials courses are conducted in English at CAPS; therefore, we provide a pull-out English Language Learner (ELL) program for our beginner level students who need to develop or strengthen their English language skills. Students work one-on-one or in small groups with their ELL teacher to gain proficiency. For students who just need a little support with the English language, will receive specialized help during their regular class times.
CAPS utilizes the World-class Instructional Design and Assessment (WIDA) English Language Development (ELD) standards as our guideline for the ELL program. This leveled program includes five language standards in each of the four domains, Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing to support language acquisition. The focus is on vocabulary usage, language forms and conventions, and linguistic complexity.
